Instructor: Mary Jane Erard
Ages: Adults + Mature Teens
Skill level: All
Date: Sunday, March 3, 2019 from 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Each workshop has a slightly different subject matter or theme. Students are welcome to join in at any time.

Learn how to create a beautiful landscape using pastel! In this course, Mary Jane will lead you through a series of exercises designed for the beginner through advanced pastel artist. Instruction will cover composition, color, and technique for painting with pastel, as well as working through individual challenges that students will encounter throughout the creative process. Individual instruction is tailored to each student's knowledge base of pastel and objectives.  New for 2019, students can bring either soft or oil pastel to the workshop. Mary Jane will demonstrate how to use one or both mediums depending on student interest and what materials students bring to use themselves.

Students will spend the first hour and a half (or so) working on a drawing to practice with the medium and loosening up. In the latter portion of the class, students will work on a more detailed and complete pastel landscape using the techniques practiced earlier in class.

Students should bring or buy the following materials to participate in this course:

  • At a minimum 2, 9" x 12" sanded pastel sheets

  • A good selection of soft or oil pastels in landscape colors. Sennelier, Faber Castell, Holbein, Rembrandt, or other good to excellent quality pastels will also suffice. Bring what you have and Mary Jane can make suggestions for additions to your collection.

  • And, you will need a colored pencil (no lead pencils please) or Tombow Brush Pen marker. If you don't have one handy, you can borrow one from someone in the class.
