Join us for a fun and informative workshop with award winning artist, Mary Jane Erard. You might have seen her art in The May 2019 issue of Southwest Art Magazine or recently at the Ann Arbor Art Festival! In this Holiday Speciall Workshop, MJ will show you step by step to create a beautiful sunset scene on a landscape format 12x24” sheet of Clairefontaine Pastel Mat paper.

While creating the scene, you will learn to:
• Understand the materials used in working with pastels, how different papers and brands of pastel influence your work
• Understand what the differences between soft and oil pastels are
• Plan your painting
• Make a preliminary sketch to guide you
• Make a background under painting
• Work from dark to light tones
• Make and render shadows
• Blend from one color to another
• Render basic shapes
• Add detail, light tones and highlights
• Complete a simple pastel painting

Upon completion of this course, each student go home with a beautiful 12x24” sunset scene in pastel and the skills to be able to plan and render a simple pastel drawing or painting. All materials are included.

About the Instructor:
Mary Jane Erard is an award-winning artist painting in soft pastel, oil pastel, gouache and oil. Her works are usually rural landscapes of the US and Europe. During the past 17 years Mary Jane's paintings have been accepted in 70 juried exhibitions and have won over 40 awards. She has also exhibited in over 11 national and international solo shows. Mary Jane's artwork has been published several times in national magazines and books. Three of her paintings were published in the book "Best of Pastel Painters". Mary Jane is a juried member of the Pastel Society of America and a juried member of the Degas Pastel Society. MJ is represented by Collector's Corner at the Toledo Museum of Art where you can find several of her paintings on display at all times in her own corner of the gallery and the Robin B Gallery in Chicago.
